The New Language Translation, abbreviated NLT, is a modern and easily understood translation of the Bible in Portuguese. This translation adopts a grammatical structure and language that is closer to that used by everyday people in Brazil.
Because of its simplified and colloquial language, the NLT is aimed at individuals who have not yet had much exposure to or have had limited contact with classical biblical literature. As a result, it has become an effective tool for evangelism, offering a clear and easily comprehensible text that deviates from the classical language typically associated with such translations. Nevertheless, this new version does not employ slang or regionalisms, thus preserving the biblical style.
The principles followed in this revision are consistent with those guiding the work of the New Language Translation. The translation by João Ferreira de Almeida and other reputable translations available in Portuguese adhered to the principles of formal equivalence translation. On the other hand, NLT was guided by the principles of functional or dynamic equivalence translation.
In any case, this translation is highly useful as it brings the biblical text closer to the everyday language spoken by people.
